Bio SoCal Saves a Man’s Life on the Freeway

November 18, 2021 By Alan Cohen

Bio SoCal Saves A LifeOur team at Bio SoCal are passionate not only about cleaning up biohazards throughout Southern California after crimes, accidents, or when people pass away, but also about saving people still living whenever possible.

Just last week, Bio SoCal’s crew were honored to save a life on their way home from completing other jobs. After finishing the first day of a tear gas cleanup then a job cleaning up after a gunshot suicide, our crew was on the way home around 10:30 p.m. when they came across a work truck stopped in the freeway’s carpool lane. Putting on their hazard lights before getting out to check on the driver of the work truck, they discovered the man was in the seat unconscious, not breathing and with no pulse. Pulling the gentleman out of the vehicle, the team started CPR while another member called 911. By the time the California Highway Patrol executed a traffic break and the paramedics arrived, the gentleman was once again breathing, and his heart had resumed beating.

We are so honored to have been in the right place at the right time to help someone in dire need. Unfortunately, we didn’t exchange names with the officers or get the man’s name whom we helped. We wished we had as we don’t know what had happened to him or what happened after we left. It is our hope this man is now safe at home with his family and friends, enjoying the gift of life we are each given.

Become CPR & First Aid Certified

One of the best things you can do for your family, friends, and the wider community around you is to become certified in CPR and first aid. Knowing how to help someone who isn’t breathing, whose heart has stopped, or who has been injured can easily mean the difference between a person living to see tomorrow or passing away today. Like our crew driving home after work, you never know when you’re going to come across a situation needing these skills or have a friend or family member who could live if someone with CPR skills is nearby.

The Red Cross is a wonderful organization that offers classes throughout Southern California. With both online and in-person training options, you can gain all the skills you need to be there for someone else, helping them hold onto life until paramedics arrive.

Serving Others Throughout Southern California

Normally, our team comes to a property after a person has already been injured or passed away. We go in order that further tragedy doesn’t happen due to hazards remaining in the area such as blood, drug paraphernalia, or other body fluids. We are proud of what we do: helping all people throughout Southern California in this way. This time, though, it was wonderful to be able to prevent a tragedy before it happened. This time, we were able to go home knowing a fellow human being likely also got to go home to their loved ones when the outcome could have been very different.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you.

Hoarding Explained

Hoarding continues to sweep the US in record numbers. Hoarding affects up to 6% of the US population which is approximately 19 million people, twice the rate of OCD. Hoarding has been found to run in families and is quickly emerging as an issue that continues to grow as the population ages. Hoarding tendencies typically get worse as one ages and usually after the death of a loved one, a divorce, or another significant crisis or traumatic incident.

Hoarding is a mental health condition that is now diagnosable on its own, listed in the DSM, and no longer diagnosed as OCD. Awareness around hoarding is increasing but still remains an underdiagnosed and undertreated mental illness. To put it into greater perspective, Hoarding is six times more prevalent than Autism but is not as well known, researched, or funded.

Compulsive hoarding is associated in various studies with serious health risks such as household falls, obesity, respiratory problems (caused by dust mites, rodent feces, and squalor), and poor medication compliance not to mention the risk of falling over the debris. For a better understanding of hoarding and how a hoarder feels take a look at this video by Psychologist Dr. Greg Chasson of Towson University who outlines the symptoms of compulsive hoarding and how it can lead to debilitating stress. Insurance Coverage for Traumatic Scene Cleanups

May 7, 2015 By Alan Cohen

Covered By Most Insurance

Biohazard Cleanup

Biohazard Cleanup is often very traumatic for the survivors. We strongly believe survivors should never be re-victimized or forced to clean up after a traumatic event themselves. In most cases we can work directly with insurance companies so survivors have minimal out-of-pocket expenses, and a few less things to deal with. Bottom line is there is Insurance Coverage for Traumatic Scene Cleanups.

The biohazard cleanup after a traumatic scene in a private residence is usually covered under a homeowner’s insurance policy. Policies typically cover cleanup, structural restoration, and even contaminated personal property that was removed and disposed of as regulated medical waste. Bio SoCal initiates the insurance claims for survivors, and we provide all the required, detailed information, directly to the adjuster. This includes full photographic documentation, upon arrival, during remediation, and final cleanup results. We inventory all items and structural elements requiring remediation, as well as all items disposed of due to contaminates. We will also work with the insurance adjuster directly, to answer any further questions.

For renters or people without homeowner’s insurance, there is the California Victim Compensation Program that may provide cleanup and remediation compensation reimbursement to survivors. This compensation is only applicable if the cleanup is done by an individual or company that is registered with the California Department of Health as a trauma scene waste management practitioner.
