Alhambra Murder-Suicide

May 22, 2023 By Alan Cohen

In late April, our Bio SoCal crews were out helping four different clients during a difficult time including a murder-suicide, an unattended death, a suicide, and an accidental shooting death in a vehicle. Each task needed meticulous biohazard cleanup and remediation to protect the health and safety of others.

Murder-Suicide in Alhambra

Out in Alhambra in the 900 block of North Almansor Street, a neighborhood resident requested a welfare check from the Alhambra police on two neighbors after they had been unreachable for several days. When police arrived, they found the backdoor unlocked with no sign of forced entry. In the living room were the bodies of a man and woman, both aged 56 and both shot to death. Upon investigation, it was determined the man shot the woman first, then shot himself. It has not been released whether or not the couple were married.

Once the on-site investigation was concluded and the property released, Bio SoCal was called to the scene for suicide and murder cleanup. Between the time of the shooting and when the bodies were found, blood had soaked through multiple layers of flooring and each one needed to be removed and disposed of as biohazardous waste. We then thoroughly cleaned the space, removed all cross-contamination, and permanently removed the odor so the family could grieve in peace and move forward with going through the personal belongings in the home.

We understand how receiving such news of loved ones is overwhelming, let alone dealing with the resulting blood and body fluids. While we couldn’t prevent this tragedy from happening, we worked hard to make sure the property was safe and all traces of the murder-suicide removed along with all investigative chemicals.

Our thoughts are with those who lost loved ones in this and the other tragedies we cleaned up on the same day.

Check on your family and friends

Please check in on your friends and family regularly to “say hello” and truly be there if they need to talk or just hang out. People don’t often express their feelings directly when they are in pain. Simply by your presence and expressed kindness, you may just save a life and not even know it. If you are unable to get a hold of your loved one and think they are in danger, you can request a wellness check from the police who will go to their house to check on the person’s welfare. The police will then let you know the results of what they find out. This can be especially helpful if no one has been answering the door or you live far away. To request one, simply call the non-emergency line for your loved one’s local police department and they will guide you through the process.

The National Suicide Hotline is here to help

Available 24-7, the 988 hotline is staffed by crisis counselors who are ready to help you whenever you need them. No matter what you’re going through, there are other options out there. When things go well, driving for ride shares such as Uber and Lyft can be a fun experience and a nice way to earn extra income on a schedule that works for you. However, when the unexpected happens and a passenger throws up, urinates, or is hurt and blood is spilled, not only is your schedule at risk, but your safety and livelihood are at risk as well.

Get professional help for blood and feces cleanup

Nearly every Lyft and Uber driver knows what it’s like to have someone throw up in their car and have to clean it up before taking the next passenger. Sometimes it’s simply a 20-minute detour to pull out your cleaning supplies and take care of the mess. Other times, it can take days before the odor has dissipated enough to take new passengers.

But there are other times when ride share drivers untrained in biohazard cleanup should leave the cleaning to biohazard cleanup professionals. This may be after someone was injured or dies and left blood on the seat or defecated on the car’s upholstery. These types of issues are far more dangerous as these substances carry bacteria and viruses that threaten your health and the health of your family and passengers such as HIV, Norovirus, Hepatitis B & C, MRSA, C. Diff, and the flu.

With all the nooks and crannies in a car, blood and feces can soak through multiple layers in a car and find their way into hard to reach places. People untrained don’t have the skills, protection, or cleaners strong enough to remedy the issue. Even a car that seems clean can still be dangerous and have a lasting odor. Don’t risk leaving fluids behind during blood cleanup and getting your passengers and yourself sick, thus opening yourself up to legal liability—call us for immediate service.

a woman with red hair holding a cell phone
While renting your property through websites such as Airbnb and Vrbo can be financially rewarding, there are inherent risks that can lead to damage needing short term rental biohazard cleanup. Even with proper vetting of renters, accidents and crimes can happen involving the spill of blood, body fluids, and illegal drugs including:

  • Violent crime
  • Drug use
  • Suicide
  • Deaths
  • Accidents

When the unthinkable happens and you need specialized cleanup, our staff at Bio SoCal are here for you to make sure your property is safe and ready for the next renter.

When biohazards are found on your short-term rental property

When an accident, death, or crime occurs on your property, it is often the regular cleaners or the renters themselves who will first alert you or first responders to the problem. Police will then arrive if a crime or death has occurred to ascertain who is responsible and complete any needed investigation. Once their investigation is complete, the property is released back to the property owners who take responsibility for any needed cleanup.
Once the property is released back to you as the property owner, give our owner a call at Bio SoCal and we will handle all the biohazard cleanup and restore your property to safety.

Don’t clean it up yourself

Never let anyone untrained in biohazard cleanup undertake the emotional and physical trauma of cleaning your property after blood or body fluids have been spilled whether a regular cleaning staff or you yourself. Not only are fluids easy to miss for those without the proper experience, but it is also illegal to require others to clean up these materials for which they aren’t trained. Once the property is cleaned, you also must have the proper licenses and certificates to transport the biohazard waste. Without following every rule and regulation, you put your health and your business at risk.

Bio SoCal will Take Care of It

Our biohazard cleaners are experienced and well-trained in biohazard cleanup of all types and sizes. No matter the situation, we have the techniques and tools to take care of it and make sure the property is safe for the future. With industrial-grade cleaners and personal protective equipment, we quickly get to work and restore your short-term rental for the next guest.

Property Damage Guarantee

Both Airbnb and Vrbo have property damage remuneration policies that will help pay to restore your property if a guest damages anything while staying at your listing.

  • Airbnb: You can charge a renter through the website for any damages such as a ruined towel or broken luggage rack. For damage such as blood cleanup or more extensive damage the renter or your property insurance doesn’t cover, Airbnb offers AirCover which includes up to $1 Million in property damage reimbursement.
  • Vrbo: Vrbo allows you to require a damage deposit or for the renter to purchase accidental damage protection which would pay the owner up to $5,000 for damages depending on the purchased amount of protection.

We work with your insurance

When renting all or part of your home out on a short-term basis, you need to carry extra insurance on your homeowners policy to protect yourself, the building structure, and your belongings. While you will need to check your policy for specific coverage, our team at Bio SoCal will make it easy for you by carefully documenting all the damage and filing the claim on your behalf. We will then be there to answer any questions from the adjusters so all you have to do is manage your next renters.

Accidents, a death, or crimes can happen at any time at your short-term rental property. At Bio SoCal, we are available any time of day, every day of the year so you are never without help when you need it. We understand time is of the essence and you need to get your property back to rentable condition. Simply give us a call, answer some basic questions so we know what help you need, and we’ll send out a team to clean the biohazards and protect your business.

Bio SoCal On Scene After Mass Shooting in Beverly Crest

March 21, 2023 By Alan Cohen

FacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmailFacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

the words mass shooting written on bullet shells
Three women who were all out-of-state tourists, were recently killed and four others injured in a mass shooting in Los Angeles County. As one of several mass casualty events in the area during the first months of 2023, this trend of violence is distressing.

While the investigation into what happened is still underway, police do say It took place early on a Saturday morning in front of a short-term rental house in the Beverly Crest neighborhood, just east of Beverly Hills. According to witnesses, a party was underway, and after officers responded to multiple 911 calls, the three women were found dead in a car near the front of the house.

What is a mass casualty event?

A mass casualty event occurs when the amount of people killed or injured as the result of one event such as a shooting, building collapse, or natural disaster, overwhelm the resources available to help the victims.

A mass shooting, like the ones that occurred at the beginning of this year, is when one or more people kill or injures multiple people simultaneously. For example, in addition to the shooting where we cleaned the car of biohazards, there were other shootings including six people killed inside a home in Goshen, a 72-year-old man killed 11 people and injured nine others at a Monterey Park dance studio, and a 66-year-old man killed seven co-workers and injured one more in Half Moon Bay, all in the month of January, in addition to several other mass shooting events described in the news article.

Bio SoCal cleans vehicle after mass shooting

In the neighborhood of Beverly Crest, Bio SoCal was called to the mass casualty scene to clean the vehicle once the area was released back to the property owners. Without cleaning the car of all the blood and body fluids as well as decontaminating every surface, the vehicle could not be dealt with safely. Many people believe that the police will clean the biohazards from the vehicle, but that is outside the purview of the police officers’ duty. A biohazard cleanup company should be called in to clean the crime scene after the mass casualty incident. Only people with specialized biohazard cleanup training should ever undertake cleaning blood and other biohazards from an area whether one person is injured or many. Even the smaller jobs we handle take in-depth knowledge, expertise, and professional equipment to be able to declare an area truly clean and protect all those involved in the cleaning and recovery.
When there are structural layers, small nooks, and crannies, or a widespread crime scene, as is common with mass shootings, it is easy for most people to miss spots of blood or not realize there are hazards not seen with the naked eye. This is especially true in cases like the vehicle the three women were in which we cleaned in Beverly Crest.
With all the tiny areas of a car right around the driver and passengers, it is easy for blood and body tissues to find their way into hard-to-reach crevices. Some parts of the car, such as the seats and the carpet, cannot be salvaged, and must be disposed of as biohazardous waste. Other parts, such as metal and hard plastic, need to be meticulously cleaned from top to bottom to remove all the fluids and prevent cross-contamination.

Trained and experienced in how to properly clean crime scenes after mass casualty events throughout Southern California, our entire team at Bio SoCal know how to meticulously work through a scene whether in a large space or a compact car to make sure all hazards are removed and all personal belongings are returned to families whenever possible. Protecting both ourselves and others, we work hard to prevent further trauma and help our local communities begin to heal after mass casualty and mass shooting events.

Bio SoCal is here to serve after mass shooting events

It is our hope this series of mass shootings quickly comes to an end. Violence shatters lives and has far-reaching effects; every death is a tragedy.

Until that happens, Bio SoCal is here 24/7 to clean and remediate after mass casualty incidents and mass shooting events to protect our communities and help them move forward by grieving in safety.

Stabbing in Oxnard Requires Blood Cleanup

February 21, 2023 By Alan Cohen

FacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmailFacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Our Bio SoCal team was recently in Oxnard, California, cleaning up a city street after a 50-year-old man was stabbed in late December.

When first responders arrived on the scene after hearing the report of a violent fight, they found a man had been stabbed multiple times. Even though medical staff immediately transported the victim to a local hospital, the man passed away despite the valiant efforts of first responders and the medical community.

The investigation as to what happened is still ongoing. If you have any information as to what happened, call Detective Kaya Boysan 805-385-7645.

Blood is both a life-giving and dangerous substance

We all know wounds to our bodies can have lasting impacts far beyond the initial injury. To help heal our bodies, we may have to undergo surgeries, therapy, and hospitalizations, and so we do our best to keep our limbs in one piece. What is less widely known is how dangerous it can be to come into contact with someone else’s blood, even someone you know well. While instinct says to avoid the substance, we don’t always understand the specific reasons behind it.

Think of your blood as the highway system throughout your body. Through this system, the body delivers nourishment and keeps us healthy but blood can also have numerous bacteria and microbes traveling through our veins. These microbes can then cause diseases to develop such as HIV, Hepatitis B & C, and the norovirus. Sometimes, the person carrying a disease in their blood doesn’t even know it’s there at the time their blood is spilled. When you touch someone else’s blood, the diseases their blood is carrying may find their way into you and infect your system as well.

Professional Blood Cleanup Company

When blood is spilled after an accident or crime such as the stabbing in Oxnard, Bio SoCal is here to help. Our team is thoroughly trained in professional blood cleanup and we know how to remove both the visible stains and the unseen bacteria that pose a threat when all else seems clean. With industrial cleaners and our wealth of experience, we’ll make sure every drop of blood has been thoroughly removed and the area safe for use. We clean up what others miss.

When we cleaned the city street in Oxnard after the stabbing, we made sure every bit of blood left behind was removed and the asphalt cleaned of all potential microbes and bacteria. We only complete a job when we know we’ve restored the safety of an area, enabling the public to use the property safely and without fear of disease.

Call us anytime

No matter the time of day, Bio SoCal is ready to step out and clean blood and other biohazards from anywhere in the Oxnard community. With our experience and extensive knowledge of biohazard cleanup, we are the company you can count on. Available 24-7, our team is always here to help you if you ever need blood cleanup. Whether you are dealing with a crime, accident, or death, we are here to clean up all the blood and other body fluids so you can occupy the property in peace and safety.

Give us a call today. We’ll be happy to answer all your questions and provide you with a free quote and consultation.

Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends who lost their loved one in this tragedy.
