When do I need death cleanup?
When a tragic event occurs and a person passes away, there are often blood and body fluids left behind as a result. For anyone untrained in biohazard cleanup, handling the aftermath is dangerous, both for the person cleaning and anyone who will come into the area. It is easy to miss drops of blood and miss the structural layers blood and body fluids can seep into. Most people also don’t have access to the industrial-grade cleaners needed to truly disinfect a space, nor do they have the legal permits to dispose of blood-soaked materials, legally classified as biohazardous waste.
At Bio SoCal, we hold ourselves to the highest standards when conducting any type of death cleanup. We know families and property owners need someone they can trust when experiencing what may be the darkest moments of their lives. When those moments come, you can turn to us to thoroughly clean the property so it is safe for all involved, protect you from any future legal liability due to improper cleanup, and strictly adhere to all local and federal rules and regulations for biohazardous waste disposal. With Bio SoCal on the job, you are free to focus on what is important knowing your safety is being protected. Each member of our team are caring, respectful of your privacy, and we go the extra mile to care for you and your needs.

Removing A Mattress After A Death
In the aftermath of a death, the emotional toll on loved ones is immense. Apart from the grieving process, the cleanup of the affected space including the disposal of a contaminated mattress must also be attended to as quickly as possible, especially when it involves biohazardous materials such as blood and other body fluids. When biohazards are involved, the mattress can’t simply be thrown away. The blood and body fluids must be removed and disposed of as regulated medical waste. The remaining parts of the mattress can then be thrown away as regular trash. Bio SoCal can take care of the whole process for you.
What Is the Coroner’s Seal on the Door?
When an unattended death occurs and the next of kin is not immediately available, police will conduct an investigation and the coroner removes the body. Once that is complete, the coroner places a seal on the door to the property to safeguard the interior until the legal representation of the deceased arrives. Only the police, coroner, or legal representative (usually next of kin) are legally allowed to break the seal. Even if a property needs to be cleaned and biohazards removed, the property owner must wait until the seal is legally broken. At Bio SoCal, we’ll work with the coroner’s office and police department to decontaminate the property while abiding by state and federal laws.
Helpful Resources After A Death
Navigating the Stages of Grief
At Bio SoCal, we are here to support you in that first stage of shock and loss by disinfecting the affected space where the event occurred and creating safety. Individuals and families in the initial shock of loss, such as from crime, suicide, accidents, or overdoses, are often numb and in disbelief, requiring a safe environment to process their grief and someone to take over the practical steps of biohazard removal. As shock transitions to anger and fear, emotions can become intense, and we handle these with empathy and understanding. We know people facing a sudden loss are feeling disoriented and isolated as they are forced to reorganize their lives. With both respect and support, we offer patience and understanding as our clients navigate these stages of grief whether they are walking through guilt, self-blame, depression, or withdrawal. Eventually, individuals begin to re-enter relationships and seek new life patterns, needing patience and understanding as they rebuild. Bio SoCal provides spaces for grieving individuals, allowing them to focus on healing while we handle the necessary environmental restorations.
Death Certificates
After a person passes away, entities such as government agencies, financial institutions, insurance companies, and probate courts need to be notified that a person has died and their accounts need to be closed or funds transferred. To do this, the estate executor must order multiple certified copies of the death certificate from the California Department of Public Health. Ordered by mail or online, the application needs to be filled out and the fees paid. As this process can take several weeks, it’s important to place the order as soon as the certificate is available. To know how many copies to order, list out who needs to be contacted and whether they need to have a certified copy or whether a photocopy will suffice. Add to the number an extra copy or two in case any entity is overlooked. Though handling the logistics of someone’s death can be extremely difficult in the first stages of grief, it is important to get the ball rolling so the estate can be settled as quickly as possible.
